Small Dog Run Work

UPDATE - The Parks Department has leveled the small dog run, and the run is now safe to use. Please be aware that there is only one gate, and use caution when entering and exiting the run so none of the small dogs run out. A double gate is still in the works, and hopefully coming soon.

New Sign for Small Dog Run

1/30/08 - The New York Parks Department has posted an official sign for the Sir William's Small Dog Run. This follows a significant amount of work that has been done to the small run, including an expansion and new entrance. The new gate is temporary and the board anticipates that it will be replaced with a double gate soon.

Official Rules Posted

1/20/08 - The official rules of the dog run, which were reviewed and approved by the NY Parks Department and several other committees, have begun to be posted. Our first official sign is at the entrance of Sir William's Small Dog Run. Be sure and check it out on your next visit to the run, or read the offical rules by clicking here.

Howl-oween a Howling Success

10/28/07 - There were celebrity look-alikes, punked-out pooches, and many other ghosts and goblins at the highly successful 2007 Annual Howl-oween Party. A record number of people turned out with their dogs fully dressed and ready to show off to the community as well as the onlookers without dogs. With the generous prizes donated by our sponsors, 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded via a community vote to the best-dressed dogs. Visit the gallery to view photos. In addition to the party, a membership drive was also taking place. Many new members signed up and received goody bags as a special treat for joining FTDOG during the membership drive. Work Day Wet, But Successful

10/27/07 - It was wet and muddy for the brave (and possibly crazy!) volunteers and FTDOG board members as they kept their commitment to the Parks Department and had a dog run clean up day. Much was accomplished despite the weather; the fence was moved to enlarge the small dog run, a giant mound of dirt left from previous work was spread and leveled, erosion spots were dug up, and some wood chips were spread. The Parks Department said they were quite impressed with our commitment! Because the rain prevented a majority of the work that needed to be done, the FTDOG board is hoping to plan another work day soon. Check our events page for updates.

Community Alert - Assault in Fort Tryon Park

10/25/07 - There was an assault on a female jogger around 8am near the Broadway side of Fort Tryon Park several days ago. While the woman was not hurt and the man (described by a police officer as 5'7" Hispanic) ran off as she screamed for help and attracted attention, the sexual nature of the assualt was clear. Please be aware of this and help spread the word in the community. There is a discussion and more information about the attack on our message board.

Parks Department Begins Requested Work

10/25/07 - The Parks Department has begun some work requested by the FTDOG Board. As these changes are taking place, the run will be a bit messy. We thank you for your patience during this time. Due to weather and the Parks Department's schedule, we cannot estimate when the work will be complete, though we anticipate it will be done quickly. The work currently being done includes:
  • Enlarging the small dog run by moving the western fence as well as the fence around the Birch tree
  • Leveling of the small dog run and removal of wood chip build up from fence line at gazebo
  • Pruning of Crab Apple tree
  • Temporary entrance for the small dog run to help meet the needs of those owners who do not want to walk through the large dog area. The FTDOG Board is continuing to work with the Parks Department on a permanent double gate installation.
  • Delivery of wood chips for clean up day
